(Gillispie - Are you using a cart?  What are your check-in and -out procedures?  How do you track/inventory them?)

Check-in and -out Procedures - these are the procedures used at Cape Fear Middle School.

Canby Schools iPod User Group - good resources for cart set-up and getting started.

Anyone have procedures for purchasing apps for their shared class of iTouches? We have a cart and can obviously sync but how do you control and purchase the apps and do you need to purchase one for each itouch sync'd?

We have designated one computer on each campus as the "syncing station." Each campus has selected one or two individuals who have access to the iTunes account for that campus. Teachers research and compile a list of the apps they want. This list is then submitted to the individual in charge of syncing on that campus. Purchases are made with iTunes gift cards. We had to use a credit card to create the iTunes accounts but we removed the card from the account once it was created. Campuses can use funds from their supply budget to purchase iTunes gift cards, can request gift cards from PTA, or teachers can even purchase and donate gift cards themselves. Apps that are purchased and downloaded to the iTunes library on the syncing computer can then be loaded on ALL iTouches that sync to that computer.

We have just purchased 120 iPod touches and 3 charging "carts" which look like suit cases basically. We plan to use a pc, not a Mac to sync them all. Apple rep told us syncing with the pc is a much slower process. I was wondering if any of you are in this same situation and have any suggestions.

@Donna - So far, our principals have been purchasing the small Mac Book Pro to go with the carts. As you're probably aware, this allows you to sync 20 Touches simultaneously. From discussions with Apple techs and researching forums, it appears that the reason why PC's will only sync one at a time vs. a Mac doing 20 is more about the power/voltage in the USB ports. Macs can support a higher load than a typical PC's USB. Syncing to a PC means that this will be a more hands-on process. Once you get them initially synced, subsequent syncs shouldn't take as long unless you're pushing out lots of content each time. I have heard rumors that there may be work-arounds for this issue. Anyone know?

In our recent Apple training we learned that when you're first setting up an iTunes account you can go through the steps to purchase a free app and once you arrive at the Credit Card field you'll notice a "free" radio icon at the end. All of our teachers made free accounts without entering a cc and we're going to do the same with all of our carts. We're then going to purchase iTunes cards to purchase apps.

Here is a page that shows how to do a free iTunes account. It will say "none" not free. http://learninginhand.com/ipod-touch-tips/

What is your policy for a student breaking or losing an iPod? Do you have them pay the entire amount, I would think it's not feasible to pay a repair cost for one. I was just wondering if the idea of losing the privilege is preventative enough, thinking it might not be.
